At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 miles to the gallon."
In response to Mr. Gates` comments, General Motors issued the following press release (by Mr. Welch himself, the GM CEO:
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice daily.
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally, executing a maneuver, such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
4. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT". But then you would have to buy more seats.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive.
6. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by one "general car default" warning light.
7. New seats would force everyone to have the same size bottom.
8. The airbag system would ask ("Are you sure?" before going off).
9. Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
10. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary),even though they neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car`s performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice department.
11. Every time GM introduced a new model car, buyers would have to learn driving all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
12. You`d press the "start" button to shut off the engine.

That's a funny one. I remember reading it somewhere on the net.

In case you don't know yet, right now GM is having a lot of problems. They are requesting a bailout from the US government. If they don't get it, their chief executive says they will run out of money very soon (at the end of the month).

Signs of the bad economy. GM mostly makes big cars and SUVs. When the gas prices were high, many people couldn't afford driving like before as the big trucks consume more gas. Now they are more inclined to buying smaller cars as they are more efficient and economic.

I think the above is funny too. As an American... I would say this as to the car thing. I know as do most here that Japan makes the best cars. A Japanese car will start to have problems at 100k miles while the GM car at 50k miles. This is well know that they make great cars and trucks... whatever. My brother drives the full size Tundra and I drive an SUV. Toyotas are great but for me... I am a big guy. No really BIG and I have to say that the big SUV is wonderful for me... ROOMY and very comfortable to stretch out. Also, IF I was to get into an accident... I would much rather be in my SUV than a toyota suv. Yes, Toyotas have air bags... but so does GM. BUT the difference is that the SUVs by GM are a TANK!!!! The doors have metal bars that go through them and just shutting the door is like closing a vaults door to a bank. SOLID! Also, it is just BIG and the bigger the vehicle the safer you are. I have my family and I feel safer in my SUV than I would in a Toyota. I have the air bags too... The down side... the GAS MILEAGE is poor... it is not bad bad but it is poor. The good side... is that even when the gas prices are high here in the U.S., we are still HALF of what they pay in England and probably most of Europe. So, there ya have it :-) Oh, yea, one last thing... Parts! Toyotas are a quality well made car... So. Any parts you might need it will be expensive and to replace it... you have to pull half the car apart to put it in. GM. The parts are abundant, cheap and VERY easy to pop in so repairs are real easy and less expensive. So that is my uneducated thoughts on our car problems. Toyota... great product... lasts forever... could be safer... complicated to replace parts. GM. Less expensive than Toyotas, decent product... last a fair amount of time before needing repairs and is very safe... poor gas mileage.
ON THE SIDE HERE: I WOULD NOT GIVE UP MY SUV FOR ANYTHING! When it comes to driving my family around and having ROOM inside... that is everything to me. SAFE and COMFORTABLE! Now, can somebody please translate this to french for me please :-) Only kidding. J'ai plasant???
